 Southern Yellow Pine Blocks (softwood) are produced from lumber grown in the pine belt of the USA, from Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Although Pine is a softwood, Pine blocks are extremely durable and reasonably priced. For over 100 years Pine has been the number one choice in manufacturing facilities in the USA because of the combination of comfort and durability that they demonstrate. The US automotive industry -- GM, Ford, & Chrysler -- have been Pine block users for many years. GE plants, Timken Bearings plants, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Alcoa, and Donnelley & Sons Printing Co. plants are all paved with Southern Yellow Pine blocks. Southern Yellow Pine is extremely handsome when sanded and finished with clear coatings. We usually finish Pine blocks with polyurethane. Pine takes stain extremely well, and so the color tone of Southern Yellow Pine need not always be yellow! Ask us for some samples stained in walnut and see what a dramatic effect the stain can make. We are proud of the many natural and stained installations we've made over the years with Southern Yellow Pine blocks. We are especially proud to be in the Lobby, Hall of Fame, and Ford's Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN (see Photo 1a), where we installed over 18,000 sq. ft. of 2" depth x 4" x 6" nominal dimension Pine Blocks, sanded, stained in walnut, and finished with a satin urethane. Pine blocks in natural color, with blue stain in the grain, is warm and striking. Great in a log home!
We should also mention that Pine Blocks were used in the streets and on many bridges in the USA...before bricks! Demonbreun Street in Nashville, TN was once paved with Pine blocks. We have pictures! It was interesting and exciting for us when we learned that the Country Music Hall of Fame was built on Demonbreun Street in Nashville. If you ever travel to Pensacola, Florida, please look carefully at the streets in Downtown. Many of the streets there are still paved with Pine Blocks!
