Douglas Fir (softwood) is a popular choice for End-Grain Block Flooring. Fir Blocks are produced from lumber grown on the west coast, from Oregon and Washington. Fir blocks are extremely warm in appearance, and extremely durable. Fir blocks are also used in industrial facilities. However, most are used for decorative purposes. Fir takes stain extremely well, and most fir block installations are stained. Fir blocks are cut from slower growing and very large fir trees. Fir blocks tend to be small. Fir blocks are available as individual blocks installed one block at a time, and they are available in strips with a wire system for ease of installation. We are proud of the many fir installations we have made over the years. We are especially proud to have installed over 28,000 sq. ft. of fir blocks in the art galleries at Smith College, Northampton, MA, using ½", 1", and 1-½" depth blocks. Another recognizable installation is the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art on the campus of Hampshire College, Amherst, MA. We installed Fir in the art galleries at Eric Carle. Fir blocks are usually finished with oil.
